Description

We hiked Acatenango by ourselves without a guide. It is possible, just make sure you have enough water, food, good equipment and map! The campground is very new and has a crazy amazing view on Fuego volcano! Valeriano can be reached in Soledad, there in the shop you can ask for him or in the café. He can give you a guide too or rent tents, sleeping bags anything basically... Only thing to bear in mind is that the area is high, so not many trees live there, and the few that do are cut by Valeriano or the other camp site owners for construction and fire wood. We know how terrible this is, they do not. So if you can bring with you already cooked food or raw stuff, torches and warm cloths so you do not need to burn the last pieces of the natural forest. Enjoy the volcanp it is breath taking!

We did it WITHOUT GUIDE and slept here in our tent, there are free platforms to pitch a tent in this area, excelent view to volcán de Fuego. We only paid 50Q pp in the trail. It took us 5.30 hours of walking, carrying all our stuf, water and food, clothes and camping stove, water proof protection for us and for our tent!! We arrived at 13.30hs and we were alone so we could choose our place for camping, (anyway that night there was no one else sleeping in a tent).
We came in mid June and it rained almost all night, anyway the sky cleared out and we could see the eruptions, amazing!!!
We wrote the indications of the trail in the pin "start of the hike" to come up WITHOUT GUIDE!!
~
Espectacular!
En el pin "start of the hike" dejamos indicaciones del camino para venir SIN GUIA!!

In La Soledad, ask for Valeriano, you can find his parking lot right across from Los Amigos Parking Lot. Basically always follow the path towards where soy tours go, use maps.me, we did it by ourselves and only got equipment from Valeriano. Next time I'm coming with my own equipment so no need to pay anything. we were also lucky as there was not a fee to come up, they said they might restart that on January 2024.

Make sure you bring enough water & fire if you want to make a little fogata!

here's Valeriano's number if you wish to contact him! -> +502 4521 8217 - local guide and so on so he can help you if you don't want to do it alone

Camped here after hiking the Acatenango by ourselves. Our platform was a little futher this point, above all the cabañas for the groups.
No one came to ask for money to stay there. The platform seemed to be a little abandoned. Right in front of the Fuego, you can see it erupt from your tent ! Cf pic
From here around 45min 1h to the top of Acatenango.

Super dodo spot in the forest with access to a watchtower (5 min walk) To observe the el agua volcano behind, and the active acatemango and el fuego volcanoes. I advise at night to see the explosions and the Lava flowing without any ascent. Hiking trail available on site too. Super ecotourism campsite.
table, restroom, barbecue....

We did the hike without a guide (comments on that on the hike starting point icon in iOverlander). We camped just a little bit further up (a few meters more on the trail) than the point here, on a nice terrace with Fuego view next to a small hut with a steep, pointed roof. Nobody came to collect money on a wednesday, the only tour group was well below on another terrace.

Definetely possible to hike up by yourself. We decided to stay in one of the basecamps of the many companies that maintain them, for 100 Quetzales with the two of us.

This view is incredible, best climb we have done hands down. The views (and sounds) in the base camp are already fascinating!
The trail to the base camp is an easy trail, not dangerous or rocky. We walked with our 5 year old, with a 4 yr old on a horse. It's 1.300m gain, so a bit tiring. Took us 5hrs with a lot of stops and taking it easy.
The walks to El fuego and to the summit of Acatenango are much more difficult, and not really suitable for kids.

Hiking the Acatenango is incredible if you have a clear sky for the view during the day and night.
You can easily do your hike without guide or tourcompany. Just use maps.me or mapy.cz to follow the route and bring your own campingstuff. Note: since covid-19 they will say to you at the parc entrance that a guide is necessary, but it is not! Probably they will let you sign a paper that one person of the group is the main responsible one. Just sign it and don't fall into this trap of paying for a guide which is not needed.
Take care that you stay overnight at the base camp area at the southeast corner of the vulcano, the other one at the southwest corner does not have a view on Fuego.

This is AMAZING. Visit this place if you have the chance, this is an experience you will never forget! It's a nice and well maintained trail, no guide needed to get here. Make sure you follow the red trail to get here, and not the green one where all the organized tours go. Here, there was only one onganized group and a few individual hikers. We had a platform all for ourselves and were blown away by this spectacle that lasts all night. Wow!
