This area is permanently closed. There is clear signage posted that prohibits camping within 1/2 a mile of Smithsonian Butte Road. This and all of the other roadside spots are illegal. The area is heavily patrolled by local law enforcement.

The road coming in was incredibly bumpy but manageable in any vehicle. Breathtaking views 360. decent Verizon signal.

Report Check-In

Road is impassable. Don’t attempt this at all. Deep ruts, boulders protruding from road.

Beautiful site. There were not a lot of people. A decent amount of spots but you have to drive for awhile. If you’re looking to go to Zion you’re at least an hour away bc you have to go back through Hurricane to get there.

We spent a night here and would definitely recommend it! We didn’t have any problem getting our promaster down to the end of the road. The washboard wasn’t the worse we have seen and wouldn’t keep us from returning. We had mediocre Verizon service but good T-Mobile. If you keep going on the main dirt road there seems to be a lot more side trails with good spots.

Report Check-In

It is quite possible that this road recently became a lot worse due to rain/snow, but this has to be one of the worst washboard roads we have ever driven on (and we’ve been on a lot recently). We were going like 10mph and it felt like it was rattling our entire van apart. We turned around after a mile.

This is one of those spots. We got to feel like lizards basking in the sun on some large rocks overlooking Zion and it was quiet, clean and secluded. Absolutely stunning, and US Cellular 3 bars LTE. Obsessed with this spot

Easy drive in from 59 / Apple Valley, just a bit of wash board (2.5 mi) to get through. Once you’ve turned off 59 onto Main St and you reach the sign warning you “Hazardous Road Ahead in 3.5 Miles” (see photo) I clocked the marked camping spot at 0.8 miles from the sign. A bit further there are additional places to camp, even for my 19 foot trailer, with numerous small trees and privacy. Great views of the surrounding mountains. FYI another posted sign (see photo) says no camping within 1/2 mile of the road.

BLM appt. Very private, coul de sac. Absolutely beautiful!

Report Check-In

Really beautiful view, super peaceful place. I recommend!

Incredible views and secluded. Drove in from Apple Valley/Hwy 59. Road was fine, some washboard. Would not recommend driving in from Rockville/Hwy 9 without high clearance and 4WD. There is one very steep, rocky section of the road closer to Rockville

Report Check-In

Great spot no need for 4 wheel drive, views of Zion national park to the north.
Very quiet, saw a rabbit in the morning.

Report Check-In

Perfect spot with great views. No people and no cars here. Very quiet. You can go for a hike in the red gorgeous mountains nearby. We had phone service and were able to watch movies at night!

Report Check-In

It was raining a bit so we couldn’t get far up the road at all, stopped at a small clearing off the main road just after the fence stopped. Was one other camper van who also couldn’t get up with the wet mud. Very quiet, no problems so far.

Report Check-In

Awesome place, great views. Spots for any type of camping. Can get windy at times but beautiful. Great Verizon signal. Town near by. Main road coming in both directions are good for any vehicle. Can get slick if it rains. Enjoy and please pack it in- pack it out.!

Report Check-In

Drove up this rough steep road. Lots of signs say no camping.

Report Check-In

Inaccessible en RV (24feets) nous avons du faire demi tour devant la route en gravier très inclinée . Dommage l’endroit semblait super calme et très beau

Report Check-In

Along this road were some really nice spots near Zion National Park. if you have 4x4 or at least high clearance you should be able to take the road South from Springdale to get here no problem.
At my camping site I was able to get perfect T-Mobile LTE.

Report Check-In

Great place close to Smithsonian Butte to stay for free and very quiet with a great view to the mountains of Zion National Park and Pinedale Mountains. The Smithsonian Butte Backcountry Byway is fine from Apple Valley but rough in spots coming from Springdale.
