Mexico
This is the site of one of the cave paintings. It is accessible by vehicle but I would recommend 4X4 or a posi track at least. The majority of the road leading up to it is paved but once it is unpaved it is VERY bumpy. Go slow! Note that you have to get a permit from the town of San Ignacio before coming. Then you take the rough road past the site to a hostel area. There you will pick up your guide. We drove him down to the site with us. He unlocked the gate and showed us the various figures on the wall. Really cool. Worth the trip. Give yourself more time than you think you will need (mostly because the road is ROUGH!) P.S. photos don't do it justice!
Why? By checking in after you’ve visited a place you let others know this place is still functional. You can also add or correct any information.
Now 100mxn/pp and 200 pesos for a guide (max 4)
I have to admit I wouldn't come again for that price as the Cueva del Raton is pretty small, outside, and can be done in 5min.
Beautiful drive through the canyon. Last few miles is unpaved and not for big rigs.
Guide didn't speak English but is required to unlock the gate
. Cave paintings were very clear.
The road to Cueva del Raton has been improved. The rocky road mentioned in previous posts have been covered with dirt. We saw many sedans that made it to the cave. Fantastic artwork!
Report Check-InYou can visit the caves without permit from San Ignacio. Register at the hostel; they collect the entrance fee (had to pay M$ 120) and will organize the guide (with key), M$ 100.
Report Check-InThe difficulty of the road in is pretty grossly overstated. The cave itself is 20 miles from Mex 1 the first 17 of which is paved asphalt. The last 3 are a single lane dirt track that's well graded. Some sections are paved (these were potentially the problem areas in the past?). With careful driving should be quite doable with two wheel drive and normal clearance (though I was in a 4x4 van). Biggest concern is running into traffic headed the other way as passing could be difficult in places. Very scenic drive.
