I think this place has changed a lot since then. Most of the land around the panamericana is fenced or has houses. We went up one small gravel road approx. 100 m and slept to the side of the road. There is a bad smell coming from the water pool. People passed by in the evening and morning but no one seemed to care we where there. Okay for one night.
Report Check-Infull of trash. don't waste your time and drive on. doable with 2WD if you really wanna see the dirty dunes
