“Smithsonian Butte Backcountry Scenic Byway: Camping within 1/2 a mile of this road on BLM managed lands is prohibited.”
Why? By checking in after you’ve visited a place you let others know this place is still functional. You can also add or correct any information.
After hearing others were ticketed I researched the area. The Saint George BLM has a handout that outlines the regulations at:

Camping along the Smithsonian Butte Scenic Byway (within 1/2 a mile) road is prohibited. No camping is allowed in this location.
Report Check-InNo camping allowed here. Camping is only allowed more than 1/2 a mile from Smithsonian Butte road. All of the roadside spots are illegal. Heavily patrolled by both BLM Rangers and the county Sheriff. They have been writing tickets without giving a warning first. It used to be a good spot but got completely trashed so law enforcement stepped in after a bunch of complaints from locals. Someone keeps tearing down the “No Camping” signs but you can find them laying around, the rangers come through periodically and put them back up. Camping here is a good way to get a ticket or harassed by an angry local. The closest legal dispersed camping to Zion is out by Virgin unfortunately.
Report Check-InWARNING: When we arrived in the afternoon and there were multiple other camps set up along the road including multiple RV's. The site we picked looked well used and had a fire ring with no obvious "No Camping" signs. Police came through at 11:00 pm and cleared everyone out. They wrote us a $275 ticket and made us pack up our entire camp and load our trailer in the dark to leave. They drove down the line doing the same at every camp, and drove past multiple times while we were loading up to leave.
Report Check-InBeautiful spot, which is quiet, clean and there is enough room for at least 10 RVs. Maybe even more if parked smart.
Report Check-Inthis spot IS open. it has nothing to do with the national park, the national park is in a completely different town. there are signs that clearly say camping is permitted up to 14 days as long as you're at least a half mile from the main road. it is Smithsonian Butte
Report Check-InCamped here for 2 nights without any issues. You have to park 0.5 miles away from the main road. Lots of other campers on Thursday night, popular place. There are several established pull off campsites with fire rings.
Report Check-InTypical BLM camping spot and has good signs / markings. The road says you need 4x4 but the first part of it you can do with a 2wd van. After a certain point you will need it though. Great view of the morning sunrise.
Report Check-InThis campsite is closed. Signs state that camping within 1/2 mile of either side of Smithsonian Butte Scenic Byway is closed.
Report Check-InMany No Camping signs on the way up Smithsonian Butte Rd. Stopped in a flat lot with other campers where there were no signs. Road up was rough and we have 4WD. Good Verizon signal.
Report Check-Inthe road is in pretty rough shape. we got up our with our 2wd sprinter without issue but it was some of the roughest most rutted driving of our trip. some spots you could get into trouble.
that said, there was a 30 foot rv, so I'm probably just a wimp.
great views, beautiful spot
Report Check-InBumpy road coming in but nothing too sketchy. There are 2 other vans (I’m in a little schoolie) and a couple of cars with multiple tents around them. Easy to find, easy to park. Goodnight
Report Check-InWide flat area located just off of the side of the road on Smithsonian Butte Road. Windy location on a canyon with nice views towards Zion and the surrounding hills. Space for multiple smaller RVs or vans with two fire pits.
