I hate to report a bad experience, so hopefully it was just a one time deal. There were a couple of people working on their truck. Can't get your car started? Understandable. But they would roar their race car engine every time they tried starting it. Then came and went ALL night. Will call Cabelas management and inquire if this is acceptable for their standards.

Old “nice” hotel waaay better than the one next to town (the rooms were so dirty and dark. Also with shared bathroom ???)
I booked a doble room with balcony and of course a clean private bathroom.
Everything is old but clean.
I booked the room in booking for 15€. Here is 35€. Not wordy for 35 but for 15 not bad at all.
There is massive parking and security all night so perfect for moto riders.

On the banks of the Mississippi River. Follow signs from Hickman to the ferry and then go several hundred yards downstream to a large, level, gravel lot. Park away from the circular turn around (with rock pile in the middle). We had a quiet night, but could be louder at other times as there are several grain elevators nearby. Good cell service for Mint/T-Mobile.

Rwanda -> Uganda

Border closes at 8pm CAT, 9pm EAT.

Arrived at 16:10 on a Wednesday and spent 70 minutes

On RW side, stamp out carnet at RW customs (building to the left/west side) then register vehicle details at the gate.

All immigration formalities happen on the UG side.

At UG gate, register vehicle details. Then park at Uganda Revenue Authority (building on right/east side) to stamp in carnet and pay road tax (220000 USh or 60 USD). We had only USD so they sent us to one of the fellas roaming around who charged us $65 for him to mobile pay the URA bill. Then we went back to URA, to complete the paperwork.

Then across road to RW immigration, stamp out, then next door to UG immigration to stamp in after filling out an arrival form (had East Africa Visa).

Finally to the Security office (just west of immigration) to show road tax paperwork and get a gate pass.

Show gate pass at exit to the road to Kisoro.

Changed money FRw -> USh on RW side at bad rate I'm embarrassed to say. I did not enquire about the rate on the UG side.

I'm not sure what happened with the prior user's experience, but I hadn't seen their post so I did my standard process of calling CB beforehand and asking if they allowed overnight parking. I was assured that it was fine, so we spent a quiet night and left in the morning with no problem.

Lovely place accessible for all type of véhicules. We were with our camper there, beautiful views, a lot of space. Perhaps too rocky for a tent. No wind shelter. Flat. The most beautiful sunset we had!
We really loved this place!

We stopped here to eat in the home-restaurant in the beginning of the Village Basiran. A couple invited us to their home and showed us the whole village. It’s a very nice and old village with nice clay houses like we know it from some old movies. We stayed the night near this mosque with a fantastic view to the village agriculture landscape in front of the old clay castle which is approximately 200 years old. At the restaurant you can get Falafel, kebab and other rice based Iranian food. People of the village are fantastic nice and helpful. If you want to experience some village kindness than city ones, this place is the place to be. Quiet night and good sleep. The old man from the mosque changed our defect Mercedes sprinter lamp and he has some German lamps from old time which suited perfectly to our car. Miraculous village:)). And the WC with water was let open for us the whole night to use. Electricity is as well available. The village locals came in the morning and brought us local milk, yogurt and bread. All were very nice and curious about us and we had nice chats and nice walk in their gardens.

Awesome spot with a pit toilet VERY clean, shelter, grill and fire pit. Sunset and sunrise were incredible! We slept in our DGC and a couple of RVs and camper were there too. We slept great and felt safe.

After the viaduct the Ruta 40 is due to heavy rainfalls washed out. You have to cross several times the river. While that you have to dare to drive with high declination.
It‘s a demanding ride but doable. Very scenic drive. We did it with our Jeep Rubicon.

I wish I remembered the exact dates - maybe the next person can add them. But on Apr 10, the sign on the locked gate said "closed Nov (??) to Apr 30 (??) to protect winter elk range".

Sorry I didn't think to enter this yesterday, when I might have remembered the actual dates!

The locked gate also blocks the road beyond the campground - there's a wild camping site on iOverlander that's also inaccessible.

What an amazing lakeside campsite! And probably the only one open this time of the year in the area (we found at least 5 closed ones and also talked to locals in town). We stayed 3 nights but could have easily extended it to even more, as there are many things to do and see around.

Facilities: clean grassy sites with lake views and sunrise over the lake. Clean bathrooms, hot showers and kitchen sinks. Roofed tables with light and electricity to every site. Private firepits with the possibility to make campfire (look for wood in the forest next to the camping). Mini hikes on site with 3 viewpoints and a cave. The ocean coast is 15 minutes walking distance or 2 minutes by car (don't miss the sunset). Kayak rentals for 4000 clp/hour. Super friendly owner, he keeps his animals (sheep, cows, horses and chicken) separately so the campsite is clean and tidy. Very quiet place, best for a good night sleep. Easy access on a good 2WD road.

All in all highly recommended, we would come back anytime again. We paid 5000 clp per person due to low season.

I’ve been struggling to find good quality mechanic for my GSA that I rode to Ushuaia from California. Official Dealers didn’t install confidence and were expensive.
Luckily I found Edgar (Gaita) and Huan at Patagonia Motorrad who sorted out the issue for me to keep riding north to Brazil and Venezuela
They work on many types of motos. Edgar been around the world on his GSA so a wealth of knowledge about places and motorcycle maintenance
Highly recommend!!!
