This place is terrible. Bad parking lot, super busy for some reason, none of the water works. I recommend stopping in flagstaff.

I couldn’t find any up-to-date info on this volcano or national park online, so I ended up doing a lot of research and messaging people.

The volcano hike hasn’t been open for a couple of years. The park is run by the indigenous community, so the Colombia government website for the park has it marked as ‘closed’… but it’s not closed entirely.

As of last week, access to the park has been restricted to only Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays. No entry Monday-Friday. Dogs are allowed in the park, but must remain in your vehicle.

Here is a number to message Purace Administration on WhatsApp for up-to-date info on closures and available hikes. I’ll copy and paste some in Spanish below, and hopefully it helps others. +573188215460

As of now, La Ruta del Mansajero del Sol is the only thing that’s really open. It’s a drive through the park, stopping at various points and walking for a bit, then returning to the vehicle. You need a guide. You can take your own vehicle, but a guide on a motorcycle will be assigned to you.

Messages below:

At the end of dry season much more space on the spot and agree to everything described before.
Samiel, a local, assured us to be good here for the night.
Heard a hippo VERY close to us in the early evening in the river but unfortunately could not see it because of darkness.
The hippo noises were a bit frightening to us but after an hour it was gone.

the drive is feasable by motorbike but extremely dangerous and you really need to have major skills. surface of most of the road from the top to cachi is rocks, loose sand, mud and huge round rocks all over the road
Cant even believe i made it alive. dropped my moto 3 times
crashed. multiple river crossing with at least 1 foot + of water and loose ground. I would highly discourage anybody to try it unless looking for a life threatning experiencen lol

Great spot with amazingly kind people working at the restaurant. Same for us, eat food, stay in your car for free. We actually had super fast wifi in the van from the restaurant. Animals all around, especially adorable tree frogs. Food is great! International kitchen, even ramen. Dogs too cute for words!

Colombia -> Ecuador

We might have gotten lucky, as we didn't need to show anything of a criminal record or "tourist list". Officially if you can not provide any of the two, they will give you max. 10 days in Ecuador. However, we had not, said we didn't know about any of the two and we had planned lots of activities in Ecuador and plan to head to Peru afterwards within 15 days. She smiled and gave us the full 90 days.

1. Arrive at the border which is well into Ecuador country, all aduanas and immigration offices are within the same building. Stamp out of Colombia at Immigration.

2. Straight across is the Immigration for Ecuador, get your stamp.

3. Cancel Colombia TIP at Aduana, it's in the building but in the back.

4. Get TIP for Ecuador, provide copies of passport, license, car title, car itself with plates visible and VIN.

5. Done!

To be sure to get the 90 days for Ecuador, contact Hans (German) a week before you cross. He will get you on the tourist list, no criminal records or whatever needed. Or you do what we did and get lucky, haha.

Established campground opened just two weeks ago with six spaces ready to accommodate medium/large RV’s. Full services, including water, electricity (30amp), impecable showers and toilets. The fee is US$55 per spot per night and $10 per person to use the pool. There’s a barbecue grill with park tables. 100m away from the beach just across a small dune. Randy was really friendly and checking if we needed anything. The views are amazing, specially for sunrise.

As described earlier... 2 spots with 20A electric posts, one or two more spots without (not very well marked). Nobody else here on a Wednesday evening.

Great spot if you have kids as playground is only 100 ft away. The park is on the NE corner of town and very quiet... but be ready for tornado warning siren test at 6PM.

A donation for use of the campsite is requested.

If you want to stay cheap in Arequipa this is the place! We had dinner here for only 11 soles each, it included a starter, main, hot tea and a small dessert. All delicious! We ate at the one called "Conquista" but there are at least other 4 or 5 similar restaurants on this street with almost identical menus. They are open for breakfast and lunch too

Amazing rest area! mini campground nestled between the two highways. you get highway noise from both sides but there are a few trees to block the noise and lots of privacy. Verizon cell signal is weak but usable. update: predicted heavy storms with hail tonight, didn't want to get stuck out in the middle of nowhere so drive in to Topeka.

While this is a free place to stay overnight and is appreciated, it’s sad to see the neglect and lack of upkeep. This would have been a lovely spot when it was first built, but it now gives off a grungy, dirty, post-apocalyptic vibe. Lol! There are lots of garbage cans, places to park overnight in any size rig and covered picnic tables if you need one. Why outhouses were not built here, who knows. The lack of them is apparent with the TP lying around in abundance. Be careful while walking pets💩
