Had trouble find a place to drop our recycling in town so stopped here. Attendee was very friendly and helpful. Free. There is a donation box.

We had time to spend a night au the spot where there is no forbidden sign but early in the morning a man from the city came to see us and told us we were not allowed to park here. We left. Too bad the view was great.

Great place just near the lake beach. There is a bar and a bathroom service. You need to pay a local tax to stay on the site.

Wonderful site amongst line trees at these coordinates. Lots of rock fire pits, with plenty of dead trees for firewood all around. I think you must pay a $6 recreation fee (good for 3 days) to use the national forest, but unsure if it's necessary for dispersed camping. I've attached an image of the "fee area". Plenty of developed campsites nearby with pit toilets and garbage bins. This made a great half-way spot between Zion and Yellowstone for me; I just continued northeast on the 150 into Wyoming.

Very nice dispersed camping area. Plenty of designated locations along County Road 60. If you choose to stay at the same place we did (coordinates), just walk down the hill and there will be plenty of cool spots to relax by the river. You can pitch a tent on the riverbed too.
GPS directions may be unreliable, so just head on Hwy 285 and turn at the National Forest Access sign towards CR60.

I got "the knock" around 11:30pm. Opened the door to about 5 sheriff's deputies and the sheriff and about 4 police officers. A little over kill imho but they were all nice and one officer addressed me stating you couldn't sleep in your vehicle even though I haven't been able to find it in the local county or city ordinance. They let my van and a huge bus parked about 100' behind me stay the one night since it was late. I thanked them. They were nice. Parking is $3/hr!, but free after 8pm.

Great place, especially on car side if you have a smaller rig. All these little cocoons of 3/4 parking spot. Can be very secluded and peaceful if you want to.
Lots of tree coverage as well.

Great free campground along the Natchez Trace. We stayed two nights and only saw three other campers roll through. Bathrooms are still closed due to Covid-19. If you go hiking be careful of the poison oak and ivy.

Easy access to a free water spigot along the East side of the building. We have a 40’ Super C with a tow and we were able to pull right up, fill the tank, and drive around the back of the building. Easy!

This place is definitely not closed. Great spot for overnight. 4hr parking in the day, some spots around don’t have that restriction. As OP said, there’s plenty of good spots in the nearby block with different street sweeping schedules.

Lots to do. There are trails going out to the desert and the sand dunes. I don’t think bikes but horses and hikers are allowed. You can climb the sand dunes. There is one that is smaller, but good for a short climb and there is one that is 400 feet high if you want to climb for a spectacular view. Behind the dunes there is reservoir for fishing and swimming. There is also a observatory there but not sure when it is open. There are 2 main campgrounds. One is just for RVs but the other is RV and tent. Shade structures and fire rings are in this section. Monday and Tuesday host is not in campground. On that note it’s good to check in host or visitor center for open camping sites. Some can be taken, but say they are not reserved.

Dispersed camping only once you get past the Animas overlook. Keep driving and there are several pull offs along the road. We found one with amazing views and a short trail. Also, there was no litter and no poop here.. 2wd sprinter made it up. Please, remember to bring a trowel to dig a cat hole 6in deep for human poop. Or pack it out.

We ended up staying here 6 days. Two days at the bottom of road and four days further up towards the hiking trailhead.

It’s a great area, but super busy with lots of adventure seekers. The road to the trailhead was non stop from dawn to dusk. It was super windy during our 6 day stay, but we found a spot tucked in the trees to block the wind.

We didn’t see any homeless people, but lots of cows...maybe the reviewer was confused:) the trailhead leads to the summit of 2 14ers in one day so plenty of hikers and bikers...we weren’t that ambitions just walked and explored the roads.

Very nice place, very peaceful. Talked to a friendly local here. And there is a café right beside (of all things at a remote place like this) called Storhavet Café of you want to get a meal of a Coffey.
