Camaron tacos are phenomenal -- within our top 2 favourite on all of Baja. $21 for camaron, $18 for pescado. Stand is worth a stop.

Always a good place to stay. Quiet at night, lousy during the day. Don’t drive in the sand unless you are prepared to dig yourself out

Nothing really in the area on the overlander map so I had to find my own place. I avoided the city due to what other people wrote/commented on other/closed places. This is basically a bigger pullout/ parking lot off the road on a quiet road in the forest. A few local kids in with their cars hung out for a bit, no idea what they were doing... probably smoking weed. spot is very basic but works for the overnighter.

Small field just beside a secondary road. 5-10mn from Cochrane.
Very few cars passed by and two gauchos.
There is a small access (beside the bushes) to río Cochrane, wich is cristal clear (little sketchy but doable for a bath). Few trees and very calm at night.
Fire pits.
Few cans and beer bottles but we took the most we could with us so the site is fairly clean.
Ok for tents, campers and big rigs.
Finally, no barking dogs ! ;)

From Chivay to Huambo, the road is nicely paved asphalt. After Huambo for 120km to the south until El Alto, expect an unpaved road with increasing stretches of worsening washboard.

Entrance has changed a bit from description. Do not turn at the ‘la Playa’ sign...if you see it at all. The sign is off to the left and is quite small. That road, while not blocked, is clearly closed.

Drive another 30-40 meters for the new road on the left, just before the boulder. Take this towards water and then take the first right.

Definitely need high clearance as there is a dry creek bed that is washed out. May need 4x4...we didn’t try in our 2wd.

We parked near entrance. Beautiful views, very quiet and felt safe.

Good trustworthy motorcycle mechanic. Victor Hugo Ramirez, used to work for Honda and now has got own workshop. Little bit outside of main town but you can see he's busy with a real motobikes not Chinese scooters 😉 You need to follow gps coz it's not easy to find it.

We were able to buy 93 octane gas here. Contrary to the title of this location, the owner said he sells it pretty regularly to overlanders.

Caught off-guard by the lack of gas stations between Arica and Iquique. stopped here and were able to purchase gas from the place adjacent to the restaurant. Facing the restaurant, walk to the right and bang on the metal door to the junkyard. the owner will come out and has gas for sale in 5 liter jugs. 5,000 chilean pesos.

10 pesos pp to park here; no extra charge for overnight parking. Felt safe and very quiet. No telcel and wifi. 120 pesos pp for shared boats (6-20 people) and 1200 pesos for a private boat (dogs allowed). We took the latter and left just as the fog was starting to disappear (8h30 AM) and had the falls and cenote (warm water by the way) to ourselves. Registration is done in a central place, so I don’t think the price is up for discussion.

Hotel with restaurant. They allowed us to park outside and camp overnight for free, we had lunch and dinner at the restaurant. staff were really nice and security looked after our big-rig (with us inside it). We weren't bothered by anyone and it was relatively quiet midnight until 7am.

They didn't charge us but I gave them 10,000 shillings for the security staff. Friendly staff who were really accommodating and had good English. Food was nice but the service slow.

Pemex gas station. Useful spot in a pinch. We were driving and it got dark and needed a spot and this worked perfectly. Park behind the building near the west end of the lot. Pretty quiet as far as Pemex stations go- it was quiet until the morning when traffic increased.

We rolled in late and left early. Be discreet and you shouldn’t have any problems. I’m sure you could talk to the attendant and strike a deal too, we just could not with our very limited Spanish.

Also the store is pretty nice and has a nice selection of groceries. Nothing fresh obviously but we bout rice, beans, and excellent coffee here.

Tree-lined parking lot behind Century 21 office and across the street from Naked Foods. There’s a house on one side of the parking lot (separated by trees) and a business under construction on the other side (separated by a stream and trees).

No one around, but felt completely safe. Very quiet except for howler monkeys. Tucked in the back corner, very private. We were not bothered all. Should be able to park here all day.

No facilities. Used the washroom behind the brewery or at guilded iguana. Grabbed a bucket of water from a tap across the street from Century 21 to shower.

This is one of two ferry companies that run Hornopiren to Caleta Gonzola; and it's the direct one. Somarco is the other and it's the two part one. We stopped here to make a reservation for next day. Our rig is 7m long and there are two of us. Price quoted as 105,000CLP! She then told us that if we just went to the dock we could probably get on afternoon ferry without a reservation and it would be cheaper but not how much cheaper. After reading comments here and speaking to the woman at the restaurant at the dock in Hornopiren, we decided to go with Somarco. We were at office in Hornopiren when it opened it only to learn it was full but we could be wait listed. We were #6 and we made it on their 10:30 am sailing as did four other vehicles behind us. Cost was 39,000CLP.

Javier welcomed us in our large RV. We were a little concerned about the drive way in, as it was quite steep and a little rough, but dropped it in low and took it easy. Theres enough room for large RV, I think a trailer would find it tricky though.

It is very beautiful and the water to swim in is fantastic! We were only set to stay 1 night, but decided to stay two! Javier is very enthusiastic about showing the property and telling about all the renovations he plans to get done. but little by little its getting there. There is no food here yet (but coming soon), there is a few convience stores nearby but very limited. This is a rural village and very authentic, a must for anyone camping or van dwelling. There isnt a proper water or electric hook up yet, but Javier can help if it is possible, he will try to get it for you. There is no dump here just FYI.
