Been awhile since an updated review... nothing to new to report, but stayed here the other night and it was great. Large spot, could technically be two spots as there were two different fire rings set up in different areas. But there are also so many other spots around the entire crater, that I can't imagine it would ever be so busy that you would need to share the spot for two separate parties.

Not sure what road the person saying there was a downed tree on a few years back, but there were no access issues I came across.

This is a huge paved, level parking lot. There are clean pit restrooms and a picnic table or two. It’s a good place for an overnight stop. There were bugs but the breeze made it bearable. There’s a short gravel road down to a clear river.

Stopped here for the night before crossing the border to Peru the next day. It’s a great stop. Showers and bathrooms are free, clean, and nice. The parking spots are a bit slanted, but we leveled out with two traction boards. Mini market is fully stocked if you need anything.

We took the 69 highway instead of E35 and it was fine. Paved, one lane going each way. Occasional landslides that had broken up the asphalt, but nothing crazy. Remote mountain pass, but good asphalt. I recommend topping up with gas here and before Peru, because it’s much more expensive there!

Really nice place! Just by the museum "La petite Ecole de l'Anse. Visits are free and worth the time to learn about the "Chemin du portage". Recycling and trash beans. Toilets. The parking lot faces the river. Wonderful landscape.

the place is vast. it's a farm with some dirt roads and "undispersed style" camping. there is a host to help show you the place. there's flushing toilet with bedets and showers.

THERE ARE NO OCEAN VIEWS. although we thought this wasn't true considering the location, I'd lIke to make this more clear. it is false.

having said that, it's quiet and peaceful and there are roaming goats and llamas.

Late June 2024, and it's still there. Same price. $10 for dump. $5 per 5 gallons. Easy to get to in a 36' bus. Right next to good diesel pumps.

Nice family and clean room. We paid 4000 som for a private room with bathroom. They let us use the kitchen for cooking and they have a nice common area. Also let us use the laundry machine so it was perfect for us after a rainy day

Great view of the mountain. Clear for solar and Starlink. Maybe 4 spots along this road. The end and one other spot were taken late on a Saturday. Staying at this pin. Just a small pull off but it feels bigger since cars don't really drive through here much. Our van is level here. It was a bit trashed but I packed up the garbage. I also remade the fire pit which was the usual disfunctional mound. Would camp for several days here.

The road after gas station heading north is really bad until Ruhubelent (almost 300km). Some parts more potholes than the road, expect slow movement and be prepared for possible breakdowns (part of our exhaust fell down because of the road)

Our transit times with Suzuki Vitara 4x4:
- Asgabat to Yerbent 2 hours (160km)
- Yerbent to crater 3 hours (110km)
- Crater to Ruhubelent 5.5 hours (188km)
- Ruhubelent to Dasoguz border 2 hours (120 km)

The worst part is around 100km after crater which took us around 3.5 hours. Also be carefull about locals with old lifted toyotas who drive 80 - 100 km per hour over all potholes.

Enjoy for what you have paid hundreds of dollars..

The road is actually better than the main road. When you choose right track it should be possible with any car.

Drove here in rainy season but it hadn't rained the past 2 days.

Super cool road in the middle of the jungle, very few parts are slow and muddy but its mostly flat gravel road where you can reach 40-50km/h with a car.

A short side road of a side road next to a small lake. There is room for one or two tents or (maybe) one van/camper... No amenities whatsoever

Stunning spot we stumbled upon.
Recommended for dry weather and 4WD only. (We did in overland truck).
The spot is about 2KM off the main road through wasteland to a stepped down spot, just up from a sandy beach. Flat.
You can park on the ‘field’ or drive down a ‘ramp’ to the flat spot. No one around, just the local cattle. The water is crystal clear and lovely to swim in. Best spot we’ve stayed at for a while. @one.life.truck.it

Good spot to spend a few nights. Plenty of space wherever you want. There are flat areas. There are pretty clean toilets and showers with hot water. They have bread and coffee in the morning. Lucas speaks English and Spanish and is willing to help you with whatever you need.

It was hard to find a flat spot with my big camper. Frogs can be loud at night. But there were a lot of fireflies.

It seems some locals have set up a makeshift table here, there are some mugs hanging as well.

Overall a pretty nice place

Great place to stay for a night or two. Large parking lot on each side of the Cabela’s store. Nice walking distance with a sidewalk all the way to Walmart.
Fantastic phone reception (Verizon).

Strategic place very near to the dune entrance. Paid 50 Soles one person for a private room with private shower & tv. Room is a bit small but clean. Small space next to reception for one bike, or street parking. There is also a small pool & tours. I paid 30 Soles for a sunset buggy tour with sand board provided.

After reading all choices here personally we feel this was the best.
$64.000 (it is a tourist location…)
At the restaurant we had delicious trout from the farm just up the road, delicious.
Big restaurant and large parking area; we were shown where to be in very back of restaurant for more privacy. They also have a lot specifically for tent camping. Clean (except after a big weekend with lots of tourists); they have bathrooms and showers with warm water. The owners are so nice! Juan de Baptist & son Juan Sebastian.
We met Néstor who is a guide and spent Monday doing a big 9mile loop with him learning all the history of area & the Wax Palms. Miguel is the gate manager and can introduce you to Néstor and the owners if you’d like to meet them.

Beautiful place as described, we decided not to stay. Our visit was on Saturday and the many beers bottles around made our gut to decide keep going.
We finally slept at the Conaf Parking in front of Pan de Azúcar, very safe & quiet.

This place is not free. The guy said 10$ per day on the phone and said 15$ per day on site. I told him that when I talked to him it was 10$ and he let me stay for 10$. He also parked behind my van to be sure I will pay. I didn’t like it. Next time I will go just in front at the Red Claw Restaurant instead. Same price.

Stayed one night in the large paved lot to the left. Pit toilets avaliable. Seems like it's closed in the winter due to snowmobiles using the area. Some road noise but not bad.

Great tip! Backed my van up to the water spikes and pulled out the hose to top off my water tank.
This trail head is busy on a Saturday afternoon. So be patient and be quick.
Thanks for the tip!
