this is the place with the hole in the rock, you see it to your left hand side, when you drive towards elephant rock. We drove up to the plateau for wild camp. Perfect, beware the trail is particularly steep, but with 4x4 perfect.

This area was recommended by the guy at the tourist info center, not as nice as the other place near the bridge but is fine. Other people with tents here when I arrived but left the next day. There is an inexpensive campground at the entrance (3000CHL per person if you need services)

Everything is good on this road. Short bumpy section at top, but nothing to worry about. Wonderful drive and lots of waterfalls right on the side of the road. Recommend! Also several towns where it would be easy to camp for a night next to a basketball court, in front of a church or football field.

Small store but where you’ll find everything you might need that is made out of rubber. Great discovery!!

They also have some car parts (most have rubber in it;)), electrical or plastic small parts. Worth passing by if you need something you feel you won’t find it anywhere.

We bought different rubber things to improve/change the seals in our van, and some plastic fixer for cardboard panel of our doors.

This checkpoint has some friendly officers. BUT 5-10 kilometers down the road going west there’s another checkpoint. There was a police car parked and three guys wearing police apparel. A young guy approached the vehicle and started checking every single paper we had and took a tour of the van. He said he’d write me a ticket or I could give him money. His reason was because I don’t have my Mexican insurance printed, although I asked many police officer on my way into Mexico about it and no one said that I needed it. Anyways, I showed him it on my phone and he was still asking for money. I ended up giving him 100 pesos and he got a grin on his face and let us through. It was the first time we got bribed in Mexico. Oh well, part of the adventure I guess.

On the site of the historic San Pedro textile factory the local community has a project museum...they purchased the factory (now empty) and now give tours where you can learn the history of blanket and textile weaving, but even more interesting about the life and customs of the indigenous people. $5 per person. With a group of ten or more and advance notice, Rene, the head of the project, can arrange demonstrations of tradition weaving (they have both backstrap, as well as wooden mechanical looms), as well as with the curandero or “sabio ” who explains the medicinal herbs and healing ceremonies. Contact Rene at 062903879 or Mila at 093853344. English speaking guides usually available. Also can consult on other nearby places to visit as it is convenient to the local sites around Otavalo. Lastly, if you are considering shopping at the market in Otavalo, come here first and learn how to distinguish real hand loomed ponchos and blankets from the machine made versions. There also is a shop where you can buy the real thing at reasonable prices.

They allow you to dump and get potable water $10 for the two, $9 if a senior. Easy access, and you don’t have to be camping there. Water tastes okay. Be careful, there is a portable water station and an unpotable.

May need to call cell phone number for them to open. We arrived 9:30am and they didn’t open until 10:30am after we called. Great selection of hats and the ones we liked best were only $12. Ask them to show the difference between quality.

In the other side of the road of this spot, there is another access to a bigger spot, hidden by the trees. You can park (even big rigs) and pitch a tent. Not dirty and not so noisy by the road (few cars only were passing), no facilities.

Good spot for one night!

This is the waterfall you can reach when using the path "Laguna y Cascada". You have to pass through private property. The entrance fee is currently U$50 pp. This is on top of what you have to pay to get in the park.
Cool place if you're in the area, you can swim in the lake just before.

Main hike of the park. 2.4km round trip. Took us less than an hour to complete, rangers announced 2/2.5 hours.
You go up and down, it's very steep on rough terrain.
There's a mirador that overlooks the canyon.

This place was indicated to us by the administration of the park. It's in a right turn right after the bridge. The area is flat and you can get some protection from the wind if it's coming from the West. You definitely get some shade in the morning thanks to the bushes.
Below the bridge, there's a flat area for tent only, by a pond. Some people were sleeping there and made a fire.
We didn't had any traffic during our stay, the park was pretty empty for the weekend.

the price is currently U$100 pp.
IMO, this park is not worth the detour from the coastal road. great to get out of the car if you're passing through the country, but I'd recommend to stay south.

Beautiful campground, has everything you need in great conditions. Initially we wanted to camp but opted for a cabin (45.000 pn) because there was a storm coming. The cabin is ok, a bit expensive in my opinion but it includes a hot wood fired tub which is amazing.

I would definitely stay again, althoug not sure if the price for the cabin is worth it.

It is one of my favorite campsite of this trip: flat, under the trees, good wind protection, warm water, quite... The river was so beautiful and the canyon was amazing. The only bad thing were the moquitos and sand fly.

Technically you are supposed to bring an old water bottle to exchange for a new 20L one but the woman was kind enough to let us buy one when we explained we would put it straight into our tank and give the bottle back. Price is the same.
