I keep coming back here as I tramp around OR. It's been cleaned up and minimized, but the same folk are here and that's OK. No problem getting my fav spot everytime I pass through.

Great spot just down the road from Capitol Reef. There isn’t much shade from the heat but we managed to find a spot under a tree. There is a fire ring down by a small river. The river isn’t much for swimming but for a quick cool down it does the trick. The surrounding views are amazing. There isn’t any phone service for many miles so make sure to put the directions in early.

Found a small flat spot to put up a 2 person tent without an issue. The brush along the road was fairly overgrown, but nothing too unmanageable to move around outside of the tent. 1 vehicle passed at around 8pm and then no others the remainder of the night. Great spot!!

There are showers and laundry here. Price is extremely high in my opinion but other options are closed due to covid.
For showers: $8 day pass + $1 for 6 minutes.
Shower is hot but one weird thing to note: I don’t know if they’re pumping the water in from the coast but something felt weird about the water. It felt like I was covering in some kind of slippery film all over. Not sure what that was about.
Washer is $1.75. Dryer is $1.75 per load. Not sure if they dry well as I didn’t use.

Our van broke down in the carretera international while we were living in Casa de la Montaña very close by while the Covid19 pandemic. We asked the owner of our apartment for help as she lives here and knows a lot. She gave us the contact of two mechanics, and we chose this one that is reliable and meantime cheap.

He has a good knowledge of diesel vehicles. He towed our van for a cheap price back to his garage to work on it. He quickly found the problem: our high pressure diesel pump. It had to be send from Belgium, but once here, he installed it immediately and we had the van back the next day.

He has a lot of employees and a big terrain to work on, also a partly with a high roof. After some time and mechanics for different problems in Mexico, we were happily surprised by efficiency, quality and reliability! Big thumbs up!

A couple nice campsites just east (downhill) of the Hammond Canyon Trailhead. Both are under a Ponderosa Pine canopy and the lower one features a nice view over Hammond Canyon and the Abajo Mountains. The whole area (Elk Ridge) features dozens of dispersed camping spots and offers a great respite from the heat lower down in the summer months. Lower spot is slanted so may be less suitable for bigger rigs without leveling. Only an hour to Natural Bridges NM to the south. Verizon LTE as well.

Isolated camp spot on top of a hill on a 4x4 trail. A bit tight. Nice views. some jeeps came by in the evening for a cruise but super quiet at night. Steep hill, higher clearance recommended, 4wd or awd better too, especially if muddy/wet out. A couple bigger grassy camp sites if you take the southwest trail down from here, it is steep though!

Awesome free campground, but TERRIBLE bugs. We ended up staying inside our van during the entirety of our stay because of the tiny black biting bugs (not sure what they are). The bites don’t itch at first, but after a day or two they are miserable. Bring bug spray! Aside from that, this is an awesome spot with 8 sites available, lots of space for vehicles.
