We love this place! They let us bring our dog because someone had previously listed it as pet friendly, but wanted us to change it to “no dogs allowed.” There are a bunch of dogs who live at the Refugio next door, and everyone here just wants things to be super chill at all times. Paid about 108,000 cop per night for a private room, and a fair amount more for the nights we reserved on Booking.com (we stayed extra nights since we liked it so much). They let us put our daughter in a cot in the room. There were also a few kids a few nights in the dorm area I think. The food here is amazing. Thw view is great. The staff is very attentive. Of course the climbing is amazing. We also found it convenient to drive 30 min over to the cable car station (Teleferico) and visit the National Park & Water Park for the day, from here. Plenary of room for small to medium sized rigs. Pretty steep dirt driveway.

Very nice spot under big trees with lots of parrots, with a great view over Rio de la Plata. Some fireplaces with benches are there around. We were there out of the season. Almost no people. So we stood there very quiet and undisturbed for two nights. A water tap is 250 m away besides a public toilet.

Very good place for camping in Merida with only one negative thing: mosquitos. Not many in the building but lots of them in the camping area.
We stayed three days.

The roads here are not in bad condition, but the hills up and down around Nebaj are VERY steep. Make sure to be careful and drive in a low gear.

Dirt to tar road after 15km of potholes. Not impassible, just slow. Coming from Shinyanga, it is initially 100km of excellent tar, then a 15km stretch of dirt before changing to tar again. Good road overall, they are working on tarring the whole way.

Checkpoint here to pay for the tunnel/ street. Price for international cars (plates) is higher than for locals but pricelist hangs out there. We paid 10$ (700som) for our bus, car should be 5$.
Also be aware of the corrupt police man just some meters before the toll station, they were obstinately trying to get money out of us.

Update: After 314km you have to show the receip again at a checkpoint!

Got here very late in the afternoon to see The Valley under the caves. Couldn’t visit the caves anymore. Camped here as rather flat and close to entrance. It’s about 200m away from road, sporadic motorcycles at night. No ppl around

Just wanted to write again about this road, as some irresponsibly wrote it's not dangerous at all. If you obey them and pay them what they want, without doing anything that might upset them (taking pictures, disputing or challenging them), you'll be probably fine.
However, to say it's completely safe and you should just"respect their traditions and culture" is wrong - holding everyone hostage on public road, blocking the road with nail boards and holding sticks or guns, that's no culture, but crime.
Overland way had their tires punctured on this road, while they bashed on their van. This guy was dragged out and beaten for taking a picture - arguably not the smartest thing to do, but to say it's safe here and you should respect the culture - seriously?
Word of warning - today, two bodies of cyclists (German and Polish) were found dead, supposedly fallen from a cliff. I am not trying to acuse them, but it was +- 500m from another roadblock that is marked here on iOverlander.
PS: the road around the Guatemalan border is beautiful, and trouble free.

Word of warning - today, two bodies of cyclists (German and Polish) were found dead, supposedly fallen from a cliff because of an ongoing car, roughly (+- 500m) from this spot. I am not trying to acuse them, but I think it's good to have the information here :(

new buildings and extension of the university. Camped beside the empty buildings with permission of the Kurdish guards who invited us for thee. Quiet place with view on the city. Much better alternative to the parking lots mentioned for Diyarbakir.

More or less flat area right next to the lake, accessed via an easy gravel road from Halfeti. Little trafic on the road during the day, none at night. Easy access to the lake for swimming. You hear some music from the tourist boats and restaurants during the day and evening, but totally quiet at night.
Given the quantity of rubbish lying around, it must be busy during the weekends, but we were alone.
Not on the path of boats going to Rumkale and Savasan.
