Lovely campground managed by the US Army Corps.
We stayed one night in the Ringtail Cat loop (site #71) which is a dry campsite. Amazing view of the lake and the dam.
Each site has a paved driveway, picnic table under a shelter as well as a space to put up a tent. The sites ore very clean and well maintained.

There is a restroom unit at the entrance of the loop with hot showers. Pretty clean as well.
There are water spigots around the loop with potable water (the pressure is very high though!).

We arrived at around 6:30pm and the ranger was off duty. We did as indicated at the entrance and found an empty spot and settled there. We just had to stop by the entrance cabin to pay. It’s 12$ for dry camping but if you have the US National Park pass it is half price! There are loops with electricity and water and the sites are 20$ each (not sure if the 50% off apply for these ones).

If you want to go to the beach you can get a pass for free access at the ranger cabin.

Overall, amazing place to camp between Albuquerque and Santa Fe. The view totally worth it. And super cheap for what you get!

Very cheap and not bad eat. One super big slice of pizza including a drink for 0,70 $. Different flavors available. A bit “better” flavors cost 1 $ (also including a drink).
We liked the vegetarian pizza.

Went to the place after 8 pm and after 20 minutes came police to tell me to move away. They said it's an unsafe place because of smuggler and it's private property.
They asked for my passport and wanted to take me to the station. Looked like they wanted a bribe because tried to scare me saying that they wanted to take me to the police station. Did not get nervous and how they saw that I didn't had a problem going with them they just let me leave.

Basic spot to park for the night. Picnic table there and some flat, nice trails. A couple people using the trail. No garbage can on site. Not a bad spot to park for the night. Happened to be a lot of hornets (nest at entrance), grasshoppers and ants but nothing too extreme. Sign the guestbook

We fit inside at 8ft wide and 11ft tall. Just had to lift a wire. It is the middle of a hotel courtyard with rooms around, but no guests so it didn’t feel too odd. We got water and electric (ran AC just fine) and had a room for toilet and shower. Great location for cemetery and river walk. Also filtered water right next door. Paid 40k for two people.

A small camping that offers what ever you might need. There are sinks for both washing up and doing laundry. Washing machines are available if you rather spend cash, than muscular work. A bar with some simpler dishes to choose between is open until 23:00. There’s a pool free of charge. Showers offer boiling hot water to warm you up after a dip, or to just clean the dust from the road off your body. WiFi is available, also free of charge, but we didn’t use it. For prices summer 2018 look at the attached photo.

Stayed here, and was as described. Because we arrived on a Sunday, other spots nearby such as Tecolote were absolutely packed. This beach was less full, and all the locals left by 9pm leaving us with a nice and quiet (albeit overrun by ants) place to spend the night. Extremely close to Pichilinque port for the ferry as well.

As described before, it's a plaza with many parking spots that allows people to overnight. We pulled over at 9pm and there were around 10 rigs. Super quiet at night, it felt safe.

Small campground with only 4 sites but right on the river which is nice. It's actually called French Creek Recreation Site. Free with picnic tables and fire pits and pit toilets.

Several sites out along Valdez Mine Rd. This spot has an outstanding view but requires a little work to get to, driving down overgrown tracks, totally worth it. There are some exceptional remote spots at the far end of the road (10 miles on) but the road got quite muddy and with weather heading in we decided on scenic instead. There is one creek crossing at the start of the Valdez Mine Rd which fluctuates with weather... more crossings further up the road also...

If it's Saturday, don't think about coming in here. After 22:00 the place becomes a hangout for groups of drunks, they park their cars in there and a music contest starts. Nothing fancy, just some terrible gangster rap. It's loud all night and can get unsafe.

very beautiful park. campground is clean with a few private sites, bathrooms and showers are good with hot water and ventilation. Camp sites come with power and potable water hook up. lots of wildlife to view, a handful of hiking trails. the natural spring stays 72* year round offering ample snorkeling and scuba (if qualified) the public picnic area by the spring is ample and vast with a small concessions house with food, wifi, and activies rentals. Pay to camp, 20ish a night. Manatee season is in the winter months.

Nice place at the base of the volcano. From the first palapa (the one with full roof) make a left and then keep right to reach the other pin, they sell snacks and drinks there. From either place you can find trails to the top of the volcano, some harder than others. It took us hour and a half round trip we went down running on the sand slope (you'll see). Also from here if you take the left and then keep left you'll end up on the ruins in 30 mins (otherwise take 1.5 hours.

Pretty mediocre in our opinion. We were told only option for lunch was lomo saltado or chicken and rice. No sandwiches, lasanga or anything were available. Maybe because it was a Sunday? The menu was 15 soles and didn't include a starter or even a drink. "Cappuccino" was just instant coffee with milk. The desserts looked good but 11 soles for one slice of cake. It wasn't an awful experience but kind of pricy. If we had the chance to return... we wouldn't.

The best place to camp safely, hot springs, BBQ area, bathrooms, electricity and gift price usd2.5 pp. Other places that offer breakfast costs USD15 pp in my opinion is excessive for camping. I came by the Cuenca-Soldados-Chaucha-San Carlos route and then drove 30km to Jesús María. In this town there are several spas, but this is the best for the overlanders

As we didn’t have any information about this part of the street for big rigs, please see below …

In total it was extremely challenging and beautiful at the same time. The streets were tight and narrow, the rocks were big, the mountains were steep, the landscapes were stunning, and we didn’t expect that many curves. We had dry season, no rain and nice weather. We would highly recommend not to go with lager rigs than ours. As we sometimes had to reverse twice when going around thigh corners.

Leymembamba – Celendin:
Beautiful landscape. Very narrow street. Steep slopes. Almost paved, but just one track. Attention of approaching cars, trucks and busses, not everywhere is space. The second part after the river/bridge is still difficult. Attention of the ropes of the bridge, height should not more than ours.

Huamachuco – Mollepata:
Spectacular landscape and streets. Paved, but narrow as well.

Mollepata – Estacion Chuquicara:
Even more spectacular. Streets tight at the slopes. You can see it from far away like a snake. Very tight corners, we often needed two tries.
