This place is open and we were there December 2018. Walled and gated dirt parking lot with very helpful family running it living on the premises. It is dusty but also can be used for short term parking. We used it in late May of 2018 for short term parking while living in it, then left our Mercedes Sprinter there for 6 months. It has potable city water and they can wash your vehicle. Water pressure for potable water is low during day. Rough toilet with no seat. It’s called Garaje Alfredo (Phone: +51 984 135 789) and has 24 hour access. HUGE open Mercado (every day) four blocks away. We paid five Soles per day (short and long term) for a Mercedes Sprinter van. When we returned in December of 2018, the van was quite dusty but virtually as we had left it. The local police (3 blocks away) were very responsive in doing the inspection for acquiring the vehicle suspension permit and SUNAT located near the Plaza De Armas was exceptionally helpful. Family speaks Spanish only. I left them with the complete instructions for acquiring the permit to leave the vehicle.

Was there with tent. Behind the Station there is enough space without trucks.

Basic hotel on the outskirts of JB. Very basic room but cheap.
Parking is possible in front of the hotel where reception staff can see the vehicle.

Livingstons Camp has 5 large and quiet campsites along the wetlandarea close to the entrance of Nkasa Lupala NP. It’s unfenced area and the elephants and buffalos are visiting frequently. The hippos are living around the camp. And watch out the naughty baboons and monkeys, taking chances in stealing food. The warthogs are also running around the camp.

Super neat and clean campspots with a very fancy Lapa. Lights run on solar. No extra electricity plug.

Toilet and shower also nice and 100 % clean. Hot water from the gas geyser.

Good fireplaces with braai facilities - 1 bundle of wood is included.

Very quiet and an excellent spot to explore Nkasa Lupala NP or Mudumu NP.

To reach the camp a bridge needs to be crossed - max 12 tons.

To reach Nkasa Lupala - another bridge with max 12 tons needs to be crossed.

WiFi at the reception/managers house.

Camping is 300 N$ pppn. If you book via the website it gets even more expensive.

Stayed in the visitor center parking lot for the night. There are a lot of parking lots to choose from. Free from 6pm to 8am.

Took Uber/Lyft into the city after parking. Great place to stay. Very quiet and peaceful on a Saturday night.

We spent 3 nights here. We kept low profile. We had no problems and felt safe.
We left before 8am. Quiet. Not leveled but it was ok. The parking lot is pretty big. Not the dream spot, but useful in a city like SF.

Amazing spot surrounded by mountains, overlooking the road to Wadi Bih. Only accessible by 4x4. Flat rocky patch of ground just off the main track. Plenty of space. OK for tents too. Incredible sunrise and sunset. Exposed if windy.

Rancho La Bellota is a haven for seasoned travellers and newbies to Mexico alike. The owner Raul is kind and generous and speaks excellent English. Similarly, his ranch hands are friendly and helpful. The ranch itself has hot showers, flush toilets and many other amenities. Beautiful buildings surround a communal area with lots of lounge furniture, a small pool for the warmer months and a large fire pit. The main building has a kitchen and bar area, and if you feel like splurging you can rent a hotel room with ensuite bathroom. We did not, so I'm not sure the cost. We were even offered rides into town and back (easily a 45 min drive each way) for a small fee of $400MXN. The road in is dirt and as others have commented, the last stretch is pretty sketchy, but we made it in our two wheel drive GMC Savana. As you would expect from a ranch, there is livestock (horses and sheep) and super friendly Aussie Shepherds. For a fee you can go quail hunting and horseback riding. We had heard so many horror stories from Americans along the way, warning us of the dangers of Mexico. We have yet to have any issues and you will absolutely feel safe and welcome at Rancho La Bellota. Stay free of charge, but leave a tip or bottle of wine / tequila as thanks!

Clean, secure, with nice owners in the middle of the village at a reasonable price. The showers are hot. A solo foreign traveler was recently killed near Urique. There is a very visible police presence and we felt safe in town. Wouldn’t recommend hiking or free camping right now.

don't buy a simcard elsewhere in Abbottebad. Because then you will end up here anyway to activate it as a foreigner.
