Arriving in the City, we followed the signs for heavy vehicles in order to avoid the City center. We knew that other people had problems with the police, one street further, towards the center. Along the 1,7 km long connection road, a market was held. The crowd made driving not easy, only a narrow lane was available for traffic. Once we arrived at the crossroads, where we wanted to continue on the highway, traffic blocked our way. So we had to stop. A policeman pointed to us to continue, at that moment the crossing traffic stopped and let us through. Immediately another policeman waved us aside of the road. The 1st policeman wanted to give us a ticket, because ‘we were driving on a highway, so we were not allowed to stop’. We said there was no choice, the traffic blocked our way, he insisted and wrote a ticket, for 900 MXN. We told him we didn’t want to sign the ticket, because we first wanted to understand what we did wrong. He gave up and let us go, said ‘drive safely’. As mentioned on the other warning, we also didn’t like driving in the area. Lot’s of policeman on the road! The 1st police man was on a motorcycle and spoke very well English. The 2nd policeman, didn’t say anything.

Nice road to take with nice view.
Probably not the best idea in rainy season.

If you are going from Trujillo to Caraz or in the other side do not take this road if you are in 2wd. Better to go to Chimbote and take the main road. We stupidly follow the GPS and maps.me and we ending up driving 3h for 32 km on a very very bumpy and bad road, seeing that o my at the other side of the river was a nice road.

Avoid this road if you are with a 2wd car, it is very bad. Go to Chimbote on the main road

Really wish the admin note about the smell wasn’t pinned to the description of this spot, it’s really off putting. No smell at the time I visited, absolutely lovely! Could not get any closer to White Sands outside of tent camping in the park, literally 5 minutes away. Occasionally jet engine noise from the air force base next door, otherwise very quiet for being so close to the road. Tons of room for rigs of all sizes. There were 5 or 6 other vans/cars/rvs while I was there and we were all easily able to keep distance from one another. Sunset views over the lake are stunning.

Our sprinter van is 7.1m long, so we were worried about getting a motorhome price. They didn't do that, instead we got the "commercial pickup 6m" rate of $4300, and they added an "extra meter fee" of $1300. With a second person fee of $1197, we paid $6797 total. Weight didn't factor into the price (3750kg). Tip: when entering, the second person is required to walk around to the ferry, you can't go in your car as a passenger. Bring your passport and ticket with you. We asked the men if we could go on top and they said no problem, but we were near the last to board. Arrival in La Paz: the passenger again needs to walk through security and meet up with the vehicle later. I might have misunderstood the la Paz security, but I straight up exited the premises and was picked up on the side of the road by my boyfriend. He said the vehicle inspection wasn't super thorough but they do still charge $176p.

Very close to the tourist look out is this hotel. The police recommended it. I’m in the car park which is totally OK and is free so long as I eat in the restaurant, which is very reasonable and being used by a cycle tour group. There are very few non wild camping sites in this area, so this is a good find. I walked around the hotel and there is a large and very clean shower/toilet room which I’m sure is available. The police that recommended it are eating here so it can’t be bad!

Couldn't fill our US fixed tank because we didn't have an adapter.
Did come outside to try and help at 6pm in the rain.
Did give us some delicious freshly cooked donut bread stuff.

To summarize our history with this mechanic: we arrived driving our car and we left on a winch, with the whole motor disassembled and with damages. We went to another mechanic in another city to correct and finish the bad service done in this mechanic in Guayaquill. They made us spend a lot of money in exchange for unnecessary parts, and many parts were poor quality or were not suitable for our engine. We also spend money on rectification. When they set the engine there was a strange noise. In the end, because of this bad service, lack of knowledge and experience of the mechanic, they damaged the engine block and the worst: they did not take the responsability for the damage and still wanted to charge for the service. We definitely do not recommend this mechanic.

Stay here if in Mbeya!

It’s not your normal hotel but rather an AirBnB (also on Booking.com). We just drive up, and the owner was a bit surprised but quickly welcomed us. Probably better to book or call in advance.

House built just a few years ago with a really big gated courtyard.

Payed 80 000 for the largest room as it had a bathtub with water jets! Slightly cheaper rooms are available. Spotless, awesome bed, even complimentary toothbrushes. Great breakfast. Fully comparable to a 200 USD hotel!

Owner is a super nice guy. Really recommend this place.

Baja voyager organizes tours and assists rally teams. They have a nice mecanic team and a clean shop for this business. They also can do some repairs on RV. We had a bad experience there because of misanderstanding and bad luck. We recomend to deal only with Juan-Carlos, the boss and ask for a writen quote before starting anythink. The hour rate is 35 USD.

This post is from a cyclist’s point of view:
We crossed yesterday and it was definitely the best border crossing ever! Visas could be done at border directly. There were ready in 15min, no picture or passport copy needed.
The road to go there was a good dirt road on the Tanzanian side, and in very bad condition (full of gigantic potholes and some stretches of sand) on the Zambian side, though very passable with the bikes if it’s not raining just before or during your journey. The road between Mataï and Mbala is absolutely magnificent! And there was ZERO traffic at this border!

In Bajgiran you can get manat for a quite good rate, we could change 1$ for 17.9 Manats.

Border itself was good too, friendly and no problems. Carnet gets stamped and small check on Iranian side. On Turkmen side some paperwork, we had to pay 138$ in total for our 87' Hiace. (plus 110$ for 2 visas).

good points are a nice site in Apple orchard and good wind protection, but significant drawbacks for campers. only one shower, 2 toilets and 1 sink for whole site, would be crowded when site busy, shower on cold side of tepid at best, only one table at site under cover so others would have to cook in tent in bad weather as no kitchen or room available to be under cover. owner does not allow clothes washing ( does not like site of hanging washing apparently, but the fact that they will do it for you for 12000 regardless if this is only one pair of socks may also be a reason)

Nice place to chill for a few days. I was told that camping was no longer allowed on the fields, but I can put my tent in a wooden cabana, which was great. I paid 10k per night. Nice staff and good vibe.

came in a 2wd Ford e150 with no problems although weather was clear and dry. we arrived at 10.30am and bought tickets for the day and parking. after a nice day in the park, they let us camp overnight and use the bathrooms, showers, and we cooked on the tables in their shelter. there are a decent police presence who are very friendly and this was extra reassuring for us because the guy who was working for semuc champey overnight seemed a bit drunk and dodgy. that said, nothing bad happened. we think he just wanted to sell us sneaky beers and/or drugs. we re-entered the park at 6am the next morning before anyone else arrived and had the place to ourselves for 2 hours which was wonderful! they didn't charge us to re-enter or to camp, although camping should have cost 10per vehicle I believe.
