I forgot my rule " It is easier to seek forgiveness than permission." I stopped by the gate to ask if I would be able to park my rig in the lot to see the ruins in the morning. Took forever and still no one said yes or no. I came by after dark and just pulled in and parked. No one said anything. Stayed 2 nights and was able to be the first through the gate at 6am. No one bothered us or said anything. Very quiet, no cell or Internet. I parked with a 25' Class C towing a car. Left the rv and drove the car to the ruins. There was no way I would have made it in the rv. Part of the road has been fixed the other part...a road to pothole hell. Lots of wild turkeys at 6 am.

This place is fine. It is out of the wind. There are trees for shade. The tables are on cement floors and they are spread out. Bathrooms were clean. The area we were at, the dirt had been raked clean Quiet night. Only some horses came through in the morning.

The road is quite narrow at points not steep but curves are sharp so go slow.

Dique Campo Alegre. Nice landscape, cows, horses... Some garbage around. Some guy came by and charged 40 pesos per person because it is a private place he said.

Well here are the most beautiful beaches in Colombia...
BUT:
- prices are incredibly high : entrance fee 53k pp low season / 63k high season + vehicule entrance 14k + car parking 10k. Makes over 130k for the two of us! And that is only for one day, if you want to see the cristal beach you have to go on the same day otherwise you need to pay same price again.
- there are many other (free) beaches as nice as those all around the world! As I used to live in french Caribbeans it was noth worth it for me...

Quiet spot along the road ferdows - Mashhad. You can leave the northbound highway on a small dirt road and drive parallel to a dried out riverbed to the hills. there is 4g irancell coverage on the hill but not behind. 25m further behind the hill you are completely out of sight from the far away highway. We only saw one motorcycle on the other side of the river in the evening, no other person around. road could be muddy after rains so be careful.

the lower gate to the border was closed when we arrived, so we just parked in front of it on the side of the road. a couple of police men stopped to take selfies with our dog but noone cared about us camping there.

We were the only car crossing the border from Iran to Turkmenistan when we were there, but the process still took over 5 hours. On the Iranian side a fixer wanted to help us and demanded 5 USD after, which we did not pay. After we had our carnet stamped at the first floor of the building in the middle and were done with immigration at the right hand side building, the car was quickly inspected by customs. After 30m then the truck was thoroughly searched again by the Iranian police before they opened the gate to Turkmenistan. Why I do not know.

On the Turkmenistan side there was a veterinarian "check" of our dogs vaccination papers (costing us 20 usd). the dog itself was not looked at. we had to pay another 24usd registration fee for us three (2 adults, one infant) at immigration and another 183 USD for insurance, fuel subsidies, GPS tracker, and some unexplained fees for our 12t truck. we got receipts for everything. they did ask for a tip, but I refused. There was another thorough check of our truck (they asked specifically about whisky, camera drones and medications) and a lot of paperwork had to be filled out. I think in the 5 different offices I had to go to they must have filled out the same form over and over again based on their questions.

after we were through. there is another post a couple of km down the mountain were we had to show the passports again, and they insisted to looked again into the back of our truck.

Great place. Very quiet.
You can park inside the "castle" and be invisible from any side.

A "park ranger?" came by but did not stop, just checked all areas and drove off.

From here it is also easy to avoid the desert checkpoint.
Just follow the road until tarmac stops and turn right on the track (hard when dry).

Unpaved road, hard packed dirt, easily drivable with any kind of vehicle, starting about 10 km before Calingasta, coming from the RN40. Everything before is beautifully paved. They are currently (april 2019) building a new road.
Beautiful scenery!

take care if there is rain or a thunderstorm, when you camp here. When we camped here, there was a thunderstorm only with little rain in the evening. The rain stopped , but we were talking in our car for hours, as suddenly in the middle of the night, the sound of the small river changed. When we looked at is, there was a flashflood coming. The small river, perhaps 10 cm deep has changed into a huge one, 2 meters deep and almost reaching our car. Fortunately we were awake and could drive out and up to the mirador(see other campsite on ioverlander). But it was really frightening. so take care!

We stayed two night here, there is ruins of the old military camp, with an amazing view on the beach and cliff, and we met really kind fishermans who help us to fish (we didn’t take a fish but there is !) Really calm, we made a campfire to make a barbecue, and we saw a fox (so cute)
