I stopped by here just before closing time in a Saturday when I needed a small part welded. They stopped what they were doing and took care of me very quickly. Great people :)

This is a free parking lot with official sign indicating this status. Close to downtown. We slept here and in the morning we identified two more Motorhomes. Easy access to Big RV. Free Wi-Fi signal (VLA intelligent) but could not access the internet. The local people reported that it is this way, sometimes work and sometimes don’t work.

Right at the lagoon with beautiful flamingos. Fantastic sunset, awesome night sky and sunrise. Not hidden but no one around. Wind died down with sunset, no wind during night and in the morning. It’s only one of many spots at the salar. You can hide from the strong afternoon winds further up the hill or at some ruins (C157). One of the trails down to the shore starts from there. Coming from Salar de Maricunga direction Chanaral (C173) take the indicated turn into C157 along the west side of the salar. No need for 4x4 for the roads C173 & C157, but suggested for the trails down to the shore.

The spot to the west is really awful but arriving here I gave it a chance and ended up staying for two days. The heaps of gravel and dirt are not the nicest thing around you but at least it is very tranquil. One local on a donkey-drawn cart came along the second day, we greeted. The view on the mountains is great and I had an amazing sunset over them. It was quite a surprise that you hardly hear the motorway, maybe the wind helped, the sound of the river surely did.

Easy walk max. 2 h back and forth. We were lucky and could cross the river over a big log. As always when lot of people are around, lots of “remains”.

Best free campsite along the “Camino de 7 lagos”. At the back end hardly traffic noise. All the others we checked were directly situated at the road. Even at a high season weekend with, enough space for everyone.

Really easy process:

1. Get your passport stamped for exiting Guatemala (you’ll receive one recipe, keep it!)
2. Cross the hall for cancel your TIP (the guy makes all copies he need), you will need your sticker
3. Cross the bridge and pull over directly on the right, a guy will give you a form to complete with your car’s informations (we didn’t have all of them but it was ok!) you’ll need one copy of the driver’s license, passport and owner certificate
4. Give the form and your copies to the guy, He’ll check some stuff in you car and he’ll bring the paper to another office across the street (he went with us)
5. Wait and receive your TIP
6. Go back to you car and move on, at the last check just give the recipe you receive on the Guatemalan side and your passport. (You don’t need a stamp ‘cause you already got it in Guatemala for the C4-zone)

Took us 1.3h (15 min on Guatemala, 1.15h in El Salvador). Completely free :)

It was 20$ for us (2 people in a minivan), and not possible to bargain, don’t know how others got at 4$/p ... :) still cheaper than Teresa’s.

The price include camping, bathrooms and illimited access to 11 hot pools until noon the next day. We were the only ones on a Friday afternoon until 9am Saturday! You can enjoy the pools all night if you want, surrounded by trees, birds and huge butterflies. The staff left at 5 and there were no sound, even the restaurant is closed.

Worth the 20$ according to us, especially after a day of driving and crossing border ! Parking lot not special at all but safe with an armed guard, really quiet night.

180 pp to car camp in our rooftop tent in the front parking lot. No wind protection. Nice hangout areas. Slow wifi, hot showers and friendly staff. Not a great place but it was ok for us for a day after a long trek. Not very good campgrounds in town for overlanders, sadly.

Coming from Puerto Natales the diversion is well signed. Just follow the signs to the cave and then carry on. It is mostly gravel with a lot of corrugation but is the same all the way up.

Beach of rocks (galets) at the end of a dirty road. We don’t have 4x4. When you go to the North, take the road On your right before the bridge. Is noted « camping Lo Arrayanes ». Take the left road.
Some locals on saturday night, but really quiet. Good spot for the night.

Great spot on the lake. Tranquil even on a weekend! Friendly people. Firewood available and yummy homemade/home baked hot bread, as well as handmade wool hats and socks. We paid 12,000 Chilean for 4 people. Extra for firewood and/or bread. Sinks for washing dishes, picnic tables, fire pits. Toilets and showers. Pretty place. Shade from big trees and plenty of sun also. Animals (dogs, javelina, caiquen birds, etc) on the property. Monkey puzzle trees (auracaria) and pretty views.
