Lovely small and quiet town, lots of retired gringos doing pickleball and yoga. Campground on beach, big rigs, lots of Canadians from west and east. Clean, hot showers, nice common area. Great walking beach, clean and beautiful.

this guesthouse is one of the few that has safe parking. It is a simple but nice guesthouse. The garden from the cafe is a nice place to relax a bit. Price room is 400 per night with shared bathroom. There are also rooms with private bathroom.

A great Veterinarian if you’re traveling by plane with your dog. It’s right next to the airport and they do a health certificate very quickly.

Many options. We had the fish and beef tacos. Very good! Reasonable prices.

I would like to address the two main issues for overlanders that want to visit the ruins. 1) Driving to them from the highway 2) Dogs/Pets. My information comes from us visiting the entrance, having a look around the entrance (not attempting to drive), and talking to drivers and guides. We hired a guide which also gave us good info.

1) The workers don't want large vehicles on the access road (from the highway to the ruins). This is because they've had accidents, roll overs, low hanging branches causing damage to tops of vehicles and even windshields. I wouldn't consider us "large" (8m long, 3m high Sprinter Van) but they might. Again, we never tried to drive the road but our guide suggested we might be denied. So it would be worth visiting the entrance the day before you go and seeing if they'll allow your car.

As far as road condition: It has deep potholes here and there which can be carefully avoided. I would have driven it if the circumstances were different (such as possibly being denied and having a dog). Going slow takes 2 hours or more, going in a smaller car driven by a guide/driver takes 1hr 15m.

2) Dogs. This was our main reason for hiring a taxi. However, they front entrance (NOT the museum!) will watch your dog for $50p. Two separate guides offered to take our dog home and have it watched there. There is plenty of shade at the entrance so it could be a good option. We chose to leave our dog in the car and park in the shade. This worked out just fine.

3)Guides and Taxis. We got Roberto's number off TripAdvisor and he speaks great English. He's really friendly and smart. He came prepared with images on his iPad to show us what is inside some of the structures and of wildlife. He also knows a lot about animals and birds. He spots them like a wildlife wizard (howler monkeys. spider monkeys, owls, turkeys, wild pigs, tucans, etc). Guarantee you we wouldn't have noticed the wildlife nor know much about them if it weren't for him. He used to work with the archaeologists so he knows a lot. Texts/calls (not whatsapp) works best for him. 352 111 6569 If Roberto is booked, he can check his friend Enrique. Try to book in advance. Guides can arrange taxis for you or there are drivers waiting at the entrance. Our guide drove the taxi (not literally a taxi, just a car).

Prices: $1000p for a guide (we were two people). $1200p for a ride (per car). Entry fees add up to maybe $200p/person (you pay three times but they all add to ~$200p).

We started driving from the entrance at 7:30am and returned at 3pm. We only did the "short route" (which we never do :)) but Roberto was so full of information and we were a little anxious to get back to the dog, that we opted to not go on the extended route aka see the gran acropolis. It might have taken another hour? I'm not sad about it because I learned sooo much from Roberto and it really enlightened the whole experience.

Tonns of RV and trailer. Lot of space on a beach. Public washrooms with flushing toilets. There are also 4 showers, but at my time, there are closed. There are also small huts with table and benches and garbage containers available. I had a very quiet and peaceful night. Thanks for sharing.

Oh the places we'll go

Driving truck camper is tough in San Cristóbal. This spot is perfect although I’m not sure the store owners like us too much. We stayed 3 nights to get some work and laundry done. Lovely town and only 10 minute walk to the central plazas and markets.

Do your research on how to get to this place as the streets are narrow. May be best going around town (if
Coming from Tuxtla).

Pretty level and noisy but that’s city living

Nice campground. Clean restrooms and showers, flat ground to park, tables, fire/bbq pit, dishwashing station, $20 for small cars or tents. First come first served. There’re a few short trails near the campground. LOTS blood thirsty mosquitoes 🦟🦟🦟

Very nice cafe (with good coffee!) and delicious food. They also have a shop with crafts. The workshop is right behind the cafe and worth a visit as well. They provide training and work for villagers. Some of them come from ex-poachers families to offer them a different future and dont harm the nature anymore. A great place to spend some time between your morning and afternoon safari :).

I've been warned by multiple locals that this place is very dangerous to stay. Now they've built a gate at the entrance that closes during the night. police officers won't let anyone stay. but even if you can manage is not worth the risk

Gustavo is a nice and honest mechanic. The owner of our Posada, a Belgium guy, recommended him. We did a regular check of our car. Place is a little hard to find. Next to a small cafe. Look out for the gate in the picture.

Good spot to explore the El Chico area from. It really is very cold at night and misty in the morning/late afternoon. Not a place to just ‘hang around’ I would say. 80 pesos pp for camping + 20 pesos pp on the first day for park entrance. Dogfriendly.

Just an FYI: One comment mentiones Tolantongo on this route. We couldn’t find any signs for it on the MEX105, took a turn to some village and the road quickly became rough and for us impassable (21ft motorhome). If you have a bigger rig I would take the MEX85 to Ixmiquilpan and follow the signs there.

Fantastic bookdocking location right before the entrance to Joshua Tree. Lots of spots to choose from and some have fire pits. You can barely hear the highway. One of the best free spots we have been at yet!

Not really recommended. You cannot park inside the park, so you can only camp on the parking next to the park, in between the highway and mainroad towards town. Lots of activity: youngsters and cars until 23:00 on the parking during a weekday. Around 21:00 the police came and told us were not allowed to go to a nearby Nuclear Plant (😝). Toilets are open 24/7 and there’s a reastaurant.

A small courtyard behind the hotel away from the hustle and bustle of the town. As mentioned below, really good bathroom facilities - clean and hot showers with no bugs! Price is still 25,000 pp and 25,000 for a vehicle. Staff are lovely. Wifi works well near the proximity of the reception. Small lobby has incredible aircon where you can work or relax.
