There are three places to snorkel. The beach right in front of town called Akumal Beach, the bay north of town (playa Blanca) and Laguna Yal Ku. We did both beaches. Playa Blanca was a little easier as you could just drive past all the paid parking guys and not worry about bouys. We located this trail (which is depicted on OSM and is at this GPS location). It's at a yellow TOPE sign which is next to a chain link fence. Parking is on the same side of the road immediately south of the sign. We walked north along the beach, left our bag tucked in tree, and snorkled no problem. We saw locals using this access and the beach. So for Playa Blanca: We didn't pay to park, didn't pay for a guide (only required for the better/inner areas of Akumal Beach), and didn't use a life jacket. Didn't see turtles today but many colorful fish and some coral. The lagoon Yal Ku is a different story, seems the only way in is by paying the $300pp fee (includes a $100p pp life jacket rental).

Akumal Beach is tricky. We chose the paid parking in front of Akumal Dive School which is $20p/ hr. We have our own masks. We arrived at 9am which is when the beach opens for snorkelers and did it for free along the north part, staying outside of the bouys. No life jacket, no problem. Try ADS if you want a guide because they offer a tour for $100ppp and you get your money back if you don't see a turtle.

beautiful trail on a beautiful day. I could feel some vibration due to the volcano's activity. Pretty hard to reach the starting point. I had to stop 1.5km before the starting, the road is bad, and couldn't go any further with my Grand Nómade. The mistubishi Montero ahead of me nearly flipped when tried to go further , and slide in the deep deep tracks damaged by the rain.

Still closed, the guide told us it may take several more months.
The boats are taking only persons and the price (around 4.000 pp) for transfer is normally included in the price of the tour.

If you don’t want to pay the 35 $ regular campsite, you should ask for the overflow campsite wich is 15 $. Only pit toilet but very nice place with the view on the mountains and far away a view on Pheonix. We dump for free at the dump station of the camping and fil with none-potable water. Full service for 35 $

One of few places with some dunes to hide behind on a long stretch of very flat landscape.

Even if looks like desert, this is actually farmland and there are irrigation systems to water the crops. You may hear noise from pumps/generators from a far. If you’re elevated (e.g have a roof top tent) you may be seen from a distance.

When breaking up camp and going out to the main road again, we met the owner of the land, a super friendly guy and if we’d met him before setting up camp we probably would have end up in his house for the night.

There’s a sand access road leading almost all the way up to the campsite. The road has a few patches of soft sand, so make sure you’ve sufficient speed and air down if you’re heavily loaded.

Follow the track that leaves road B303 at 7.90910, -6.12606. The wild camping location is next to some trees and at the edge of a cotton field. The track goes further and branches in other directions too, so I reckon there are more places to camp around here. There is a village close by to the South. Very weak mobile phone signal (Orange).

Leave the A3 road on track to reach this place. The track goes further and branches in different directions, so I reckon there are more places to wild camp here. Sap is being collected from the trees in this forest, but I saw no one when I stayed for one night. It's well hidden from the road. No mobile phone signal here (Orange).

Nice hostel, kitchen, lounge, space for bikes at the back. 20,000 For a private double with shared bathroom. Only one other guest when we were here but may be noisy with many others as walls thin and rooms back onto kitchen and lounge.
